Fundamentals of Physics: Mechanics, Relativity, Waves and Thermodynamics (Yale PHYS 200)
A calculus-based university physics course from Yale's PHYS 200 that starts with Newtonian mechanics (kinematics, forces, energy, momentum, rotation, gravitation) and continues through special relativity, oscillations, waves, fluids and thermodynamics. It emphasises derivations and quantitative problem solving. It suits learners who already have some physics and calculus and want a rigorous full-semester treatment.

What You'll Learn
- Solve kinematics problems with constant acceleration, vector motion, circular motion and projectiles
- Apply Newton's three laws to friction, inclined planes, pulleys and circular-motion problems
- Use the work-energy theorem, conservative forces and potential energy, including Kepler's laws and gravitational orbits
- Analyse systems with center of mass, momentum conservation, collisions and the rocket equation
- Work with rigid-body rotation: moment of inertia, torque, angular momentum, static equilibrium and the parallel axis theorem
- Derive the Lorentz transformation and use time dilation, length contraction and energy-momentum four-vectors
- Solve simple harmonic and driven oscillator problems, wave equation problems, and basic fluid and thermodynamics problems including entropy and Carnot engines
Prerequisites
- Single-variable calculus (derivatives and integrals); the course reviews some calculus but moves quickly
- Prior exposure to physics at high-school or introductory level
- Comfortable with algebra and trigonometry
