Docker and Kubernetes for Beginners: Containers, Images and Deployments

A hands-on, roughly 8-hour course that starts with what containers are and builds up through Docker images, Compose, Dockerfiles, registries and volumes. It then moves to Kubernetes architecture, kubectl on Minikube, YAML configuration, Services, Ingress, storage, StatefulSets and Helm. It suits developers and aspiring DevOps engineers with no container experience.

What You'll Learn

  • Explain what containers and images are, and how Docker differs from a virtual machine
  • Run, stop, debug and port-map containers using core Docker commands, docker logs and docker exec
  • Write a Dockerfile, build an image, push it to a private registry (AWS ECR) and run a multi-container Node.js and MongoDB app with Docker Compose
  • Persist container data with Docker named volumes
  • Describe Kubernetes architecture and core objects: Pods, Deployments, Services, ConfigMaps, Secrets, Namespaces and StatefulSets
  • Start a local Minikube cluster, manage it with kubectl and deploy an app from YAML, including Ingress and pulling images from a private registry
  • Explain Kubernetes persistent storage (PV, PVC, StorageClass), Helm charts and Operators at a conceptual level

Prerequisites

  • No prior container experience needed
  • Basic comfort with the command line and a text editor
  • Some familiarity with a web app stack (Node.js, JavaScript) helps with the demos but is not required
  • A computer that can run Docker Desktop or Docker on Linux, and Minikube
